Student Society President-Elect Removed Following Charlie Kirk Comments
The president-elect of the Oxford Union has been removed from his position after failing a vote of confidence that came after his disputed online comments about the conservative activist.
The motion against the student leader reached the necessary two-thirds threshold to oust him from his position, according to an statement from the organization.
Disputed Comments
The dispute began after Mr Abaraonye reportedly shared messages on online platforms that appeared to celebrate the death of Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead while speaking at a university in Utah.
According to reports, one Instagram post reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.
The president-elect is also said to have posted in a messaging group with fellow students appearing to welcome the incident.
Vote Outcome
The vote of confidence took place over the recent days, with outcomes announced on this week.
Official notices indicated that 1,228 ballots were cast in favor of no confidence, while 501 were opposed the motion.
The announcement confirmed that the president-elect was considered to have resigned in following the Oxford Union's rules.
Election Controversies
Proceedings were temporarily halted early on the previous day after the election official was allegedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from multiple individuals.
In a response, Mr Abaraonye asserted that the vote tally had been stopped because election administrators believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of procedural failures".
His response categorically refuted that any representative appointed by George had participated in intimidating or disruptive behavior.
Ongoing Dispute
The student maintained that extremely serious issues had been referred to the governing body and that he continued as the elected leader.
His statement added that he was "grateful and honored to have the backing of significantly more than half of university members" who supported a "secure voting process and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".
Opponents have said that any decision to keep him would "demonstrate internationally that the society has chosen ideology over integrity".
External Responses
On Friday, Kirk's former chief of staff read out an public message to the Oxford Union on a related program podcast.
The letter criticized the society of becoming a place where "student leaders openly applaud the assassination of a ideological rival".
The statement warned that if Mr Abaraonye were to remain in post, supporters would "personally contact every American political speaker who has ever spoken at the society and advise them against future participation".
The Oxford Union had earlier condemned Mr Abaraonye's remarks after the activist's killing and stated that concerns filed against him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.
The president-elect had been one of multiple members to discuss with Kirk at the union in spring.
