Former FBI Director James Comey Submits Denial Plea to Allegations of Lying Congress
Former FBI chief James Comey has denied the charges to providing misleading information to lawmakers and hindering a congressional proceeding.
The former director's attorney submitted the answer on his behalf in a US district court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on mid-week.
Patrick Fitzgerald stated he would try to have the legal matter thrown out for multiple causes including that his defendant, a detractor of President Donald Trump, was being targeted.
Mr Comey was indicted just days after Donald Trump urged his attorney general to take action against him.
Court Developments
During the hearing on Wednesday, Comey's lawyer the legal representative told the judge they planned to submit multiple motions to dismiss the proceedings before a trial, stating the legal action was spiteful and that a US attorney was unlawfully designated to assume control of the proceedings.
The former director's proceedings was initially handled by the original attorney, who resigned under pressure from Trump after his probe into another rival - New York Attorney General Letitia James - was unable to initiate prosecution.
Judicial Environment
The former director seemed in positive mood as he came into the courtroom on mid-week, conversing with his lawyers and sharing humor. He was accompanied by his wife, Mrs Failor and offspring Maureen, a government attorney who the Trump administration terminated.
Following the reading to the magistrate recite his constitutional guarantees and the dual charges against him in the courtroom on mid-week, James Comey was questioned if he understood the accusations.
"Absolutely your honour. Thank you," he told the court.
Previous Events
Mr Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from four years and was fired about several months into Trump's initial presidency as president. At the time, he was leading an probe into foreign election meddling and whether there were any links between Moscow and Trump's campaign.
Throughout his leadership, James Comey triggered a negative reaction from the Democratic party when he announced just days before the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating political contender the candidate's use of a private email server. Indictments against Clinton were not filed, causing criticism from conservative politicians as well.
Ongoing Accusations
Government attorneys claim Mr Comey provided false information to Congress during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in recent years when he was being questioned about both the email probe as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They claim he deceived the Senate by stating he had not authorized a person at the FBI to release to media organizations information about the agency probes.
Government lawyers also charge Mr Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to sway, obstruct and delay" the legislative group by making false statements to it.
Public Statements
In a video Mr Comey published to his social media after he was charged, he said he was innocent and alleged the former president of conducting himself like a "dictator".
"My family and I have been aware for considerable time that there are ramifications to standing up to Mr Trump," he said. "We choose not to live on our bended knee."
"I am not guilty," he continued. "So let's have a trial."
The accusations against James Comey surfaced after the former president shared on digital channels insisting on his top legal official, Ms Bondi, charge the former director and additional individuals.
